Carole King wrote a song in 1971 called “You’ve Got A Friend.” King, along with James Taylor, both released their own versions of the song. The song became a major hit for both artists and is still loved and played by millions today. King said the song was inspired by another James Taylor hit, “Fire and Rain,” and the verse “I’ve seen lonely times when I could not find a friend.” She goes on to add, “the song was as close to pure inspiration as I’ve ever experienced. The song wrote itself. It was written by something outside myself, through me.”

The classic Christian hymn “What a Friend We Have in Jesus” was initially written by preacher Joseph M. Scriven as a poem in 1855 to comfort his mother, living in Ireland while he was in Canada. This song is still prevalent in traditional and contemporary churches all around the world.

Who is your best friend? Who do you call when you are down and troubled? Hopefully, you learn to call on God first and foremost. God gave us a friend called the Holy Spirit, who is with us 24/7/365, but because we have a say-so, it is up to us to instigate the call to engage the Spirit. This Spirit friend is described throughout the bible to be our advocate, counselor, and friend. You’ve got a friend that can do for you what no other human friend could ever possibly do, so reach out to this Spirit friend as often as you can; you’ll be glad you did. Then go and tell others about this friend, they’ll be glad you did.

Holy Spirit, thank you for being my friend. Please lead me on this day, counsel me, and advocate for me. Shape me into the kingdom servant I am called to be. Amen

I love the Holy Spirit my best friend song. I’ve never heard that. Tx for sharing. For me God is in me and every fiber of my being. All I have to do is know the feeling even if I’m not “seeking” him. It’s my gut, my intuition and the beautiful help when I don’t see it of my sponsor, my partner, my friends and talks like yours this morning! Thank you so much , susan kronfeld
