Most people struggle to find their true identity in life. They find their identity in politics, sports, hobbies, video games, social media, ethnicity, home turf, education, work, etc. The Father, Son, and Holy Spirit reveal to us throughout scripture, especially in our readings today, that our identity should be in none other than Jesus Christ. Our allegiance is to God, not to a political party, occupation, or a select group of people.

When it comes to public display, most people are tempted to present themselves either with a motive to gain approval from others or to promote themselves and their agendas. Abraham, Moses, Jesus, the Apostles, kingdom people, etc., are called to live our lives for the Lord. Everything we say and do should be centered around the kingdom of God, and all honor and glory should be given to God. As kingdom people, we are commissioned to help make disciples in Jesus to transform the world.

Our sole aim is to advance the kingdom of God on earth as it is in heaven. Anything less is of this world, and Jesus tells us time again, His kingdom is not of this world. He also reminds us that we are to be “in” the world and not “of” the world. Our kingdom purpose statement should read something like “Kingdom People Helping People Find and Follow Jesus.”

Scripture Readings

  • Genesis 17:1-18:33
  • Psalm 5:8-12
  • Proverbs 2:10-22
  • Matthew 7:1-29

Reflection Questions

  1. What did you take away from today’s reflection and scripture readings?
  2. How do you portray yourself, publically?
  3. Do your actions resemble those of a chameleon?
  4. From whom do you give your allegiance?
  5. Does your allegiance to your country standout more than your allegiance to God?
  6. Are you ashamed of being connected to Jesus Christ as your Lord and Savior?
  7. Why do you present yourself differently with certain groups, friends, social media, and family?

Prayer

My Creator, Savior, and Lord, Please grant me the strength to become an authentic kingdom follower in every aspect of my life. Remove from me the temptation and desire to be looked at differently around different groups and individuals. I want my life to mimic your life, and when people see me, they see Jesus. Please help me be willing to always give You all the praise and glory for the privilege to live the kingdom life. In Your Spirit and name, I pray these things. Amen.
