What If?

April 15, 2021 By Harold Long Leave a Comment

“Do not bother yourself with what-ifs.” ~ Jocelyn Murray, Corfe Castel

How many hours, days, weeks, months, and years have we wasted wondering “What If?” Our lives’ categories and details are too comprehensive even to begin to decipher the amount of time we have spent second-guessing ourselves. If we could calculate the figure, our conscience couldn’t handle knowing. The truth is we all have details of our lives where we question, second-guess ourselves, and wonder what if this, that, or the other had been different. What if I would have never started drinking? What if I would have married so and so? What if I had never smoked? What if I would have gone to college? What if we had never changed schools? What if we hadn’t moved? What if I had chosen a different career? The list of what if’s is endless.

When we make God the center of our decision-making process, and we incorporate honesty, wisdom, perseverance, and love on our part, we can be confident in our decisions. Because our choices involve other people, flawed people, there is a risk our outcomes getting turbulent, hurtful, and possibly even objectionable.  The hope we can have in our decisions is that we are not trees. If our lives warrant a change, though it creates a challenge, we can call an audible and change our course of action. There is no longer any need to second-guess ourselves or allow our minds to travel into What If Ville.

What areas of your life do you need to invite God into the center and trust your decisions?

Lord, thank You for the relationship we enjoy. Please remove the regrets, doubts, what-ifs, and second-guessing that seem to manifest in our minds. Please help us trust in our decisions when You are at the center of the process. Grant us the honesty, wisdom, perseverance, and love we need to display on our end to make sound choices. In Your Spirit and Name, we pray these things. May Your will not ours always materialize, now and forever. Amen.
