“If two people were exactly alike, one of them would be unnecessary.” ~ Larry Dixon
Have you ever wondered why you were born? Life can be hard at times, and the feeling of why am I even here can dominate our thoughts. Our existence can seem pointless and unnecessary. If you are experiencing these feelings right now, please know that you are not alone. All human beings have these thoughts, and usually, it leads to subtle and not-so-subtle attempts to mentally run away, not knowing that every step feeds the beast you’re running from in your life.
There are many reasons why we can fall prey to the thoughts of our lives being meaningless. Context can play a significant role. There is such a thing as happiness inequality. Where you live, your economic situation, your lifestyle, your parents or guardians, etc., can all contribute to this overwhelming state of feeling worthless. The pandemic, social unrest, and political divide significantly influence how we think about ourselves. If we have health issues, experienced a significant change in life, or lost someone dear to us, it’s easy to sink into the abyss.
God created you for a purpose, there has never been anyone like you, and there will never be again. I encourage you to reflect on this truth. Even identical twins with the same DNA have defining features with their fingerprints, ear prints, tongue prints, etc. You are unique and created by the Creator of the universe. The question, why am I here is not the question you should be asking. It would be best if you consider asking what does God want me to do?
God has one purpose, God’s eternal purpose (Ephesians 3:9-13). When you start putting your will in line with God’s purpose, your world will explode into change. It is never too late to begin living into God’s eternal purpose. You can start by doing your best to live out the double commandment, love God and love your neighbor. That’s right, start trying to love everyone in your path, one day at a time. Your attitude and outlook on life will quickly change. That sense of worthlessness and life seeming pointless will leave. The best years of your life are ahead of you. The solution is other-centered action, not more knowledge of what’s wrong with me.
My Creator, thank you for my life. I know I was created for a reason; please help me discover and live into that reason. Please grant me the wisdom, strength, and humility it will take to be divorced from selfishness to pursue Your eternal purpose. In Your Spirit and Name, I pray these things. May Your will and not mine be done now and forever. Amen.
