“Don’t try to be a Saint by Thursday.” ~ William G. Wilson
Self-righteousness, Pride, holier than thou, judge, jury, and executioner are ways to describe ourselves when looking down on the world. Wilson’s quote reminds us of how quickly the ego rebounds and what happens when we become stricken with pride-blindness. We are fast to forget that it took everything we could muster to willingly and humbly surrender our hurts, habits, and hang-ups over to a Power greater than ourselves.
The phrase “Don’t try to be a Saint by Thursday” means we must remain humble and “give credit where credit is due,” especially for the spiritual transformation and worldly success we experience in our lives. Because of our self-centered nature, we don’t like to give God praise for the countless blessings in our lives. How sore our arms must be from patting ourselves on the back. When pride rears its ugly head, we find ourselves sitting on the throne of God, judging others, and spewing out the correct actions everyone around us needs to take for there to be peace and harmony in our presence and throughout the world.
How is your sainthood progressing on this blessed Thursday?
God of grace, mercy, and love. You deserve all the praise and recognition for the life I enjoy today. Please never let me forget to give credit where credit is due. I am entirely ready for you to remove every single defect of character in my life that You deem objectionable. My only desire is to walk justly, humbly, and mercifully in the world by loving and serving everyone in my presence and giving You all the glory for the many blessings in my life. In Your Spirit and Name, I pray these things. May Your will not mine always materialize, now and forever. Amen.
