Martin Luther King, Jr. brought equality to America and ensured civil rights for all people, regardless of race. He quickly became a hero to many and is still inspiring people around the world. Most notably, he gave a voice to the voiceless in his civil rights activities, emphasizing the importance of nonviolent protest.
It would nice if all people would approach their differences in nonviolent ways and not cause bodily injury and property damage during protests. The minority of those committing the violence reflects negatively on the majority who protest peacefully. People coming together to stand in solidarity for the oppressed and marginalized is powerful and at the heart of what God means by justice, righteousness, and peace. For God, it’s as much about the one as God is the ninety-nine.
“If you can’t fly, then run, if you can’t run, then walk, if you can’t walk then crawl, but whatever you do, you have to keep moving forward.” ~Martin Luther King, Jr.
A lot has changed for the better because of Martin Luther King, Jr. He never stopped trying to make a difference; he persevered until James Earl Ray took his life. When you stand up for the oppressed and carry a big stick, you become a marked person. The powerheads holding prominent positions will stop at nothing to keep control of the power and push their ideas forward at all costs; despite the opposition and threats on his life, his willingness to stand in solidarity with the marginalized never waivered.
“The ultimate measure of a man is not where he stands in moments of comfort and convenience, but where he stands at times of challenge and controversy.” ~ Martin Luther King, Jr.
Thank you, MLK, Jr., for your commitment to standing in solidarity for equality for all people. You led the charge in an effective and non-violent way, never conceding and always pushing forward. America is better because of you. The world is better because of you. But there is plenty of more work to be done. The world needs more leaders like you. God bless you, your family, and your legacy.
Lord, thank you for the life of Martin Luther King, Jr. He exemplified what practicing spirituality in all of your affairs looks like in the world. Please bring forth other extraordinary leaders who are inspired by his character and legacy. Grant us the advocacy of the Holy Spirit to aid in our quest for justice, righteousness, and shalom. In Your Spirit and Name. Amen.
