“Obedience is an act of faith; disobedience is the result of unbelief.” ~ Edwin Louis Cole
We are born into a world that demands obedience. Our parents or guardians have expectations for how we are to obey their instructions for living. Whether they are healthy or unhealthy principles, our keepers expect us to comply with the rules. As we mature and become adults, our friends, lovers, employers, neighbors, communities, and governments all have a set of beliefs for how we are to conduct ourselves. Right, wrong, or indifferent, these beliefs exist.
The universe also has certain principles in force referred to as the law of nature. If any living creature attempts to defy the law, there are consequences in play for such acts, e.g., trying to fly and defy gravity laws. In the spiritual realm, God has spiritual principles in place for how humans are to live. Because of our selfish nature and the rejection of God as our Master, we are incapable of obeying such principles. If not for God’s presence deep inside every human being (God’s grace), none of us could ever choose to follow God’s design for living in the world.
God created humankind with free will. Each person has the freedom to choose if they will comply and practice spiritual principles in all of their affairs or not. None of us will ever do it perfectly, but because of the perfect love of God, we have an opportunity to practice spiritual obedience. There are countless hidden promises in the spiritual realm if we choose to die to ourselves and become willing to live along spiritual lines. God’s promises always materialize if we choose to be spiritually obedient.
My Creator, it is only because of You that spiritual obedience is possible. You allow me the right to choose between spiritual obedience or living on self-propulsion. Today I choose to follow Your design for living for my life. In Your Spirit and Name, I pray these things. May Your will and not mine be done, now and forever. Amen.
