Here’s Your Sign

March 3, 2021 By Harold Long 2 Comments

“Until a person is born again, what Jesus says does not mean anything to them.” ~ Oswald Chambers

If you were alive and an adult in the early 2000’s, then you will remember this saying, “Here’s Your Sign.” Bill Engvall, a brilliant comedian, coined this phrase as part of his comedy skit. He achieved so much success with this material that they even made a cheesy movie called “Here’s Your Sign.” In our reading today from the Gospel of Mark, Jesus is frustrated with the Pharisees and his disciples over everyone needing a sign that Jesus was from heaven. 11 The Pharisees showed up and began to argue with Jesus. To test him, they asked for a sign from heaven. 12 With an impatient sigh, Jesus said, “Why does this generation look for a sign? I assure you that no sign will be given to it.” 13 Leaving them, he got back in the boat and crossed to the other side of the lake (Mark 8:11-12). Friends, the only sign you need, will be experienced in your heart and your transformed life. One of the most powerful experiences in the kingdom is watching the signs of God’s marvelous works as you walk shoulder to shoulder with others and watch them rediscover life. When witnessing the hearts of others being changed and their lives being transformed, that’s God’s saying, “Here’s Your Sign.”

Scripture Readings

  • Numbers 3:1-4:49
  • Psalm 30:1-7
  • Proverbs 10:30-32
  • Mark 8:1-21

Reflection Questions

  1. What did you take away from today’s reflection and scripture readings?
  2. What signs have you experienced in the kingdom?
  3. How did you know they were signs?
  4. How did you feel after witnessing these signs?
  5. What does it mean to be born again?
  6. Why do the words of Jesus fall on deaf ears until one is born again?

Prayer

Lord, the One true and holy God, may Your will be done on earth as completely as it is in heaven. Please guard me as I seek to live and to share Your truth with those around me. Protect Your servants who share Your good news with others. Please safeguard the hearts of those who are deciding about the gospel right now. Help them see the radical choice they are facing. Give me great boldness to declare this message clearly and courageously. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
