Dust, Breath, and Imago Dei

January 2, 2023 By Harold Long Leave a Comment

God made humankind from the dust of the earth. God breathed life into all of creation. We are only a small part of God’s creation; may we never forget it. God created humans in the image of God; how amazing is that! You and I have the DNA of God flowing through our veins. There is one catch; humans were given free will, meaning we have say-so for how we choose to live our lives. God created everything for God’s eternal purpose. Only when we put our will in line with God’s eternal purpose will we discover the Gospel of the Kingdom. We must learn to read the bible as a narrative, not a literal historical book. The bible is God’s love story, and because we are God’s creation, we are apart of God’s story.

The fall of all creation, not just humankind, allowed the propensity for all of creation to fall short of God’s eternal purpose. We must allow the dust of our flawed character to be led by our Imago Dei. Our character’s flaws will devour us if we fail to exercise our will along spiritual lines. If we fail to embrace our Imago Dei, we will miss our real purpose: to live into God’s eternal purpose. The Gospel of the Kingdom reveals God’s self through all of creation, not just humankind. The Gospel of the Kingdom also reveals that God cares about all of creation, and in the end, God will reconcile all of creation to God’s self. This absolute truth is what salvation is all about; God fulfilling God’s eternal purpose.

Scripture Readings:

  • Genesis 1:-2:25
  • Psalm 1:1-6
  • Proverbs 1:1-7
  • Matthew 1:1-25

Reflection Questions

  1. What do you take away from today’s reflection?
  2. How do you understand Imago Dei?
  3. What might you discover reading the Bible as a narrative?
  4. How would you define the Gospel of the Kingdom?

Prayer

My creator, help me discover the Imago Dei relationship that only You could have designed. Help me discover Your story, Your eternal purpose, and the truth revealed in Your spoken Word. In Your name, I pray these things, Amen.
