Doggie Bag Faith

January 24, 2021 By Harold Long Leave a Comment

You may or may not be old enough to remember the day of the doggie bag. This trend became popular in the 1940s’ because times were tough, and people would take bones and scraps home to feed their dogs. Eventually, people got smart and started using them to bring home leftovers for themselves. Today you would ask for a box. The numbers are pretty divided when it comes to who likes or dislikes leftovers. Dogs always like leftovers, including the crumbs that fall from their master’s table.

In our reading today in the Gospel of Matthew, we are introduced to a woman who has doggie back faith, meaning she is not leaving things on the table; she is going to any lengths to be blessed by Jesus. When she confronts Jesus, Jesus says to her, “It is not right to take the children’s bread and toss it to the dogs.” She responds with, “Even the dogs eat the crumbs that fall from their master’s table.” Jesus compliments her and honors her faith, “Woman, you have great faith! Your request is granted.”

Do you have faith that bold? We often don’t sometimes receive because we don’t ask, or we give up as soon a short time has passed. People get impatient and discouraged because they don’t have their request from God answered in the affirmative, so they give up. Don’t let that be you. Be bold like the Caananite woman, and don’t give up until you hear from God. It may not be the answer you are looking for, but then again, your request may be granted because of your great faith.

Scripture Readings

  • Genesis 47:1-48:22
  • Psalm 13:1-6
  • Proverbs 4:18-19
  • Matthew 15:21-39

Reflection Questions

  1. What did you take away from today’s reflection and scripture readings?
  2. Do you have bold faith?
  3. Are you willing to go to any lengths to hear from God?
  4. The Canaanite woman wouldn’t settle for anything less than a yes, will you?
  5. What is going in your life right now that you need to be bold and need God to intervene?
  6. The bold faith of Joseph blessed Jacob and his sons. Who can you bless who is in desperate need of help?

Prayer

Lord, You honor those who seek Your will. Please grant me the courage and willingness to be bold with my faith. Please help me understand there are no limits to Your power, and You could and would if You were sought. In Your Spirit and Name, I pray these things. Amen.
