Community Healing and Restoration

May 8, 2021 By Harold Long Leave a Comment

“I am of the opinion that my life belongs to the whole community, and as long as I live, it is my privilege to do for it whatever I can. I want to be thoroughly used up when I die, for the harder, I work the more I live.” ~ George Bernard Shaw

If we as a society haven’t learned how much we need each other after experiencing a catastrophic pandemic, then shame on all of us. For any of us as individuals to be our best, we need great support all around us. A head coach is only as good as the players around them, and this principle holds for our communities, towns, cities, states, and countries. If we are to persevere stronger and better than before the pandemic hit, it will take all of us to unify as a community. We all need to start looking out for each other instead of number one. If we commit to loving God and loving each other, we can change the world.

When you look up the equation for miracles in the Bible, it looks like this: God + Community + Faith = Miracles. God could choose to do miracles on God’s own time and power but rarely is this the case in Scripture. God is always in community with others who have bold faith when God is performing miracles. Even when God created humans, God was not alone. God said, “let us make humankind” (Genesis 1:26 – NRSV). For the impossible to become possible, God says, “we” can do this, but we must bring our bold faith and shovels if we want God to move mountains.” If there is little “faith” or no “we” involved, then we will most likely not experience any miracles. As a culture, we must shift from extreme individualism to a community-first mindset if the world is to share in the change necessary to survive. God says, “unify as a community, bring your shovels, bring your bold faith, and let’s move these mountains together.” God brings about healing and restoration to a community only when the community, coupled with bold faith, comes together in partnership with the Creator of the Universe to help bring about the miracle of change.

What needs to change inside you to become a true partner with God, your community, and the world?

God of mystery and wonder, Thank You for Your willingness to partner with us in bringing about the change necessary for Your kingdom to flourish on earth as it is in heaven. Please help us shed our extreme individualism and unify as a community so we can be the partner You to help bring about the miracle of change our world so desperately needs. In Your Spirit and Name, we pray these things. May Your will not ours always materialize, now and forever. Amen.
