We all need mercy. Mercy is “not” getting something that we deserve. If we are honest, there have been countless times, throughout our lives, that we have received unmerited favor and mercy. We have all fallen short, and in return, somebody cut us some slack. Do you offer up mercy to others as often as you have received mercy from others? Who in your life needs your offer of mercy and grace right now?
The truth is, God has shown mercy on all of our lives. Because of our brokenness and extreme self-centeredness, we all have ignored God’s will for our lives. We have plowed through life looking out for number one, attempting to get all we can from this world. Choosing to live life on self-propulsion, with a winner-take-all attitude, brings out all of our character defects along with our fallen nature that fuels them. God could easily choose to turn away from us and allow our broken nature to devour us, but instead, God pursues us, desires to heal us, and is willing to set us free from the bondage of self. God is a merciful God, and if we turn from our selfish and wicked ways, give our lives over to God, we will, in return, experience God’s mercy and grace, along with all of God’s other promises.
Lord, I have fallen short against You and disobeyed Your Word and instructions for living. Please show me mercy according to your loving-kindness and forgive my character’s defects according to your mercy that endures forever. In Your Spirit and Name, I pray these things. May Your will and not mine be done now and forever. Amen.
